FAQ

At Atlantic Surgical Center, we understand that undergoing a medical procedure can bring many questions. Below, we’ve answered some of the most common inquiries to help you feel informed and confident about your care.

What is an ambulatory surgical center (ASC)?

An ambulatory surgical center (ASC) is a state-licensed, outpatient medical facility where patients undergo surgical procedures without requiring an overnight hospital stay. ASCs provide high-quality, cost-effective care in a safe and comfortable setting.

Our center specializes in minimally invasive and outpatient procedures in general surgery, pain management, urology, gynecology, and more. Your physician will determine if your procedure is suitable for an ASC based on your health history and specific needs.

In most cases, your primary care physician or specialist will refer you for surgery. However, some procedures may not require a referral. Contact our office to confirm.

Your surgeon will provide specific preoperative instructions, but general guidelines include:
✔ Avoid eating or drinking after midnight the night before surgery
✔ Stop taking certain medications as advised by your doctor
✔ Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home after the procedure

Please bring the following:
✔ A valid photo ID and insurance card
✔ A list of medications you are currently taking
✔ Any required paperwork from your doctor’s office
✔ Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing

Some medications should be avoided before surgery, while others may be taken with a small sip of water. Your surgeon or anesthesiologist will provide specific guidance based on your condition.

Upon arrival, you will:
✔ Check in at the reception desk
✔ Be taken to a pre-op area, where a nurse will prepare you for surgery
✔ Meet with your surgeon and anesthesiologist before the procedure
✔ Undergo your surgery in one of our state-of-the-art operating rooms

It depends on the type of surgery:

  • Some procedures require general anesthesia (you will be asleep).
  • Others may use local anesthesia or sedation (you may be awake but relaxed and pain-free).
Your doctor will discuss the best option for you.

Most procedures at Atlantic Surgical Center take between 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the complexity. You will also spend some time in recovery before being discharged.

Patients typically spend 30 minutes to 2 hours in our recovery area, depending on the type of surgery and anesthesia used. Once you are stable and alert, you will be discharged.

No. You must arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home after surgery, as anesthesia can impair your ability to drive or make decisions.

Your surgeon will provide detailed post-op instructions, which may include:
✔ Managing pain with prescribed medications or over-the-counter pain relievers
✔ Activity restrictions (such as avoiding heavy lifting)
✔ Wound care and signs of infection to watch for

Recovery times vary by procedure. Many patients return to light activities within a few days, but strenuous activities may be restricted for several weeks. Your surgeon will provide a personalized recovery plan.
